By Your Side by Kasie West

This novel follows Autumn Collins, who ends up locked within the library for a whole weekend by accident. Only she isn’t alone locked in there with her is Dax Miller, and although she knows little about him she knows he’s trouble. Only Dax isn’t exactly who she thought he was, and she begins to realise they have a better connection than she could have ever imagined. But what happens when they get out, life returns to normal and Autumn is reconnected with her almost-boyfriend Jeff.

Rating: 2/5.

For me being locked in a library for a whole weekend sounds like a great weekend, as long as I have a good stash of snacks and cosy blankets of course. That’s what drew me to this novel the most, the plot was unique and I liked that about it. The blurb conjured up images of finding love over piles of literature.

The main character Autumn was well written, the novel touches on her anxiety and portrays it in a realistic way. Plot-wise I felt this novel didn’t really throw in many twists and I knew generally how it would go. Kasie West has been recommended to me many times, but I can’t seem to gel with her writing style in this novel, somehow it doesn’t work for me, I just couldn’t get drawn into the plot. However, instead of ending after Autumn and Dax left the library, the author continued to show us the impact of that weekend on their lives outside of the library. This was one of my favourite parts of this novel, too often stories end before we get to see the impact on the characters lives.

Overall this was an okay novel. It has all the staples for a good YA contemporary romance, so if that’s what you are looking for definitely check this one out!
